When I first seen The Great Wall, the hair on the back of my neck stood up, as I climbed, I realised just how
steep it was in places. There were times I had to go on all fours.
Gubeikou section is the scene of many historic and famous battles. This impenetrable part of the wall
provides vital access to a road running north and south across the Panlong mountains.
The mountains are named Crouching Tiger, and Coiling Dragon. This section was rebuilt at the order of
general Xu Da in 1378. There is a temple dedicated to another famous garrison general (Yang Ye).
Rebuilt in 1569 (Ming Dynasty) is the Mutianyu section, this is in a land where vegetation is plentiful.
This is 20 kilometres northwest of Huairou county. There is a cableway built here to allow tourists to climb
in comfort. When President Clinton (USA) visited, he was recorded as constantly repeating the word
Amazing, and no-one could argue with that :-)
The Autumn brings a scenery of complimentary colours that blend the wall and nature into one, and now I find
myself paraphrasing President Clinton with Amazingly, Amazing :-)
Could anything so vast, be described as natural beauty? Yet the wall seems to merge into the mountain, as
if nature had grown it. The battlement reflect the sun from its walls, and as the trees and the flowers lose
their lustre, the wall takes over.
Come the spring and nature takes back the scene, and the wall after all the years, still shows defiance.
Both strength and character are its strongest points. No-one who has ever visited The Great Wall has failed
to be impressed by its presence.
At the entrance of Mutianyu is Zhengguantai, consisting of three terraced towers, and a gate opening
into thesouthern side of the wall. Again this is of unique construction and reflects further the genious of Chinese designers.
Tower after tower, the wall continues its swirling presence throughout the Chinese mountains.
The picture above if studied carefully, reflects the magnificence, but shallows into significence
when actually visiting and seeing for yourself..!
Looking like a bulls horn The Great Wall nothwest of Mutianyu stretches
1,000 metres towards the top of the mountain, then suddenly turns back. Giving it the title Bulls Horn Ridge.
