If you ever decide to visit The Great Wall, be sure to take your time, as you ascend, observe the
brickwork and as sometimes you will notice these have markings. Some of the carvings I seen were
incredible. Have your camera ready, as you will want to keep those views for the future.
Inside the Juyong Pass is a Yuan Dynasty Pagoda that once sat astride the street. It is 9.5 metres tall
and 26.84 metres wide. It is made of white marble. Traffic can pass through the platform.
This is one of the bas-relief sculptures.
This is another example.
This is a birds eye view of Juyong Pass, its sheer elogance is enough to take your breath away.
Another arial view.
Even the archway is heavily sculpted.
The Jiayu Pass in Gansu Province is designated as the Western terminal, and is sits upon the celebrated
Silk Road. This was a military stronghold in ancient times, and was of highly strategic importance.
The pass was built in 1372 (Ming Dynasty). The lower walls are 6 metres highand has a circumference of
733 metres.
The picture above is the ruins of the first tower, found at the west end of The Great Wall.
Jiayu Pass has two gates, one in the east and one in the west. Both are surrounded by enclosing walls.
There are two floor turretson top of each of the four corners.
Inscribed in the lintel of the central gate is three large Chinese characters JIA YU GUAN, which means,
FORMIDABLE PASS UNDER HEAVEN. In ancient times it was believed that anyone departing from Jiayu Pass, and
travelling towards the west, would have an uncertain future. Truly a site to behold, and a very poular
tourist attraction.
